Workstations in the local area network can use the Windows Server’s disk area. Here are some indicative examples showing its usefulness:
Firstly, the software is installed only on the server and only additional settings are made on the workstations, which saves considerable disk space.
Secondly, all users use common files and in case of editing a file or database update all changes will take effect on the entire network.
Thirdly, information stored on workstation's disks may be damaged by a virus or an inexperienced user, which is why everything considered to be important, must be stored on a file server, where the information is much more secured.
Fourthly, when more than one disk is installed on the file server we use RAID technology, which not only can increase access data speed but prevents loss of data and in case of a disk failure only the server’s speed is decreased.
Last but not least, for a variety of reasons users are granted different level of data access. This is achieved through Active Directory for access rights.
